By converting the Cavern stainless steel fermontor into a brew pot, you'll be able to use it through your entire homebrewing process.  To do so you must first remove the plastic ring on the bottom of the fermentor.  This can easily be done by placing 1 to 2 gallons of hot water in the bottom to the fermentor.  The heat will loosen the adhesive glue on the plastic ring and the ring will slide off easily.  The Cavern can be used on a stove top burner (electric or gas) or up to a 30,000 btu burner, without any problem.  Just prior to boiling the wort, place a mesh bag into the wort and up around the opening of the Cavern.  This will allow you to easily remove all of your hops and spices when completed with the boil.  Once the boil is completed and the hop bag is removed you can submerge the Cavern into a cold water bath or place a wort chiller inside the cavern.  Custom wort chillers are available from Deep Wood Brew Products or you   Read more...

When it comes to ideas for beer flavoring, it would appear that the sky is the limit! It is as if the wilder the combination, the more buzz heard in the beer connoisseur community. For the adventurous home brewer, who has already mastered traditional recipes, there is an appeal to filling up your friend’s growlers with something they have never tried. Here are a few ideas for mixing things up in your brewing process.

Adding fruits such as pear, banana, pineapple, berries, and apples are always good, but what about something a little different? Hot peppers, such as jalapeño or chili, add great dimension to the flavor. There is really no definitive length of time that beer retains its freshness in a sealed stainless steel growler. The general rule of thumb is that regardless of what type of growler you have,  beer should be consumed within a few days of being reopened. This is because beer gradually goes flat as soon as it is reopened. If your growler is left sealed and refrigerated it can last much longer, with the exception of possibly losing some of the hoppy flavor. There are a few determining factors that can help determine the shelf life of your beer.

The first thing you need to consider is whether or not your growler was purged with CO2 before filling. Ensuring that there is as little oxygen as possible in the growler before filling it helps to prevent it from losing carbonation. Growlers have become so popular among beer enthusiasts. Within the past few years, the craft beer market has boomed with elaborate styles and various materials to transport and house beer.  However, the transport of draught beer using bottles called “growlers” is truly quite simple and the history of the growler is also simple.

The idea begins with a tin bucket with a lid. In the late 1800s, before pasteurization and the commercial bottling of beer, fresh beer could be brought home from the local bar in a two quart metal pail. The term “growler” comes from the rushing sound made as the beer sloshed around in the pail, and the hiss of the carbon dioxide escaping from the lid.

Beer Growlers disappeared from the scene in the 1920s prohibition era when the transport of alcohol was strictly prohibited in many cities. I was not until 1933, when the prohibition was lifted, that we began to see the use of growlers again. It grew popular for children to

Prior to using your new bottles or growlers, you will need to make sure you properly clean any metal particles and oils left behind from the manufacturing process. We recommend using a water, vinegar and baking soda mixture for the initial cleaning. First, fill the container approximately half full of warm water, add a half cup of vinegar and then slowly add two teaspoons of baking soda. Be very careful when mixing the baking soda in the water and vinegar solution. Mixing these substances causes a chemical reaction, which is what makes this solution such an effective cleaning solution.
